Question 159957: hi, im working on complements and suplements of angles and i had a question from my worksheet.
"The measure of the complement of an angle is 45+x. The measure of the supplement of an angle is 15x-47. What is the measure of the angle?"
My work: 45 + x = 90 15x - 47 = 180 15x 227
-45 = -45 +47 = +47 ---- = --- =(x = 15.13333333)
------------- --------------- 15x 15x
(x = 45) 15x = 227
what i dont get is what to do next. the question is asking for only one of the angles but i have two x's. If i plugg them in then i have two different answers. What should i do next to finish this problem?

Question 161047: Hi I really need help on my math homework. Here is the question: The length of a rectangle exceeds its width by 4 feet. If the width is doubled and the length is decreased by 2 feet, a new rectangle is formed whose perimeter is 8 feet more than the perimeter of the original rectangle. Find the dimensions of the original rectangle.
My teacher says that we have to do "let" statements first. Her are mine:
Let x= the width of the rectangle
Let x + 4= the length of the rectangle
I am not sure if these let statements are right, and if they are i am not sure how to set up the equation. Thanks for help

Question 161048: Hi! Can you help me? Here's the question: A side of a square is 10 meters longer than the side of an equilateral triangle. The perimeter of the square is 3 times the perimeter of the triangle. Find the length of each side of the triangle. My teacher says we have to do "let" statements. I think the let statement is
Let x = the length of one side of the triangle. I am not sure if this is correct, but if it is i am not sure how the set up the formula to solve for x.
Thanks for your help.

Question 161400: Building a hexagon shaped patio with six equal sides. The ciritical measurement is from the vertex of one angle across the hexagon to the opposite vertex. The measurement is 15 feet. What will be the area of the patio in sqaure feet?
I figured out there will be 6 triangles and I have to use the pythorean theory to find the measurements of all six triangles. One measurement must be 7.5 ft. beacause that is half of 15 ft. After I find the height of the triangles I know I would use the A=1/2 bh formula to find area. I am not sure how to put it all together.

Question 161947: A photo is 3 inches longer than it is wide. A 2-inch border is placed around the photo making the total area of the photo and border 108 square inches. What are the dimensions of the photo?
I know the length and the width are are 12 and 9. I assume that I would subtract 2 from both of these in for the answer. I just don't know how to write it in the form of an equation.

Question 162245: The problem is to find the length of a tether required to allow a goat to eat half the grass when tethered to the edge of a circular field. An analytical solution would be great.
When I was young I came across this problem and have never found a solution, I am now over sixty and what little knowledge I had of maths is fading. I would love to find a solution before I am too old to care!
Many thanks David

I tried doing
A squared + B squared = C squared and I got 400+225=625 and my answer came out to be 25ft after I found the square root of 625. I just want to know if i'm right.
