Question 389068: the shorter side of a rectangle has a length of x inches. the longer side has a length of 2x-1 inches. if the perimeter is 58 inches, find the length of the sides. remember the perimeter is equal to the sum of the length of all four sides. after the first 2 steps of your five step solution, draw and label the rectangle using appropriate algebraic expressions for each side. then complete the 5-step solution as usual. Answer by richard1234(7193) (Show Source):
The perimeter is 2(L+W) = 2(2x - 1 + x) = 2(3x - 1) = 58
Dividing by 2,
3x - 1 = 29
x = 10 = W
2x - 1 = 19 = L
Checking, we see that 2(10 + 19) = 58.
I'm not that great with drawing rectangles on this site, but it is easy to draw it on paper. Draw a rectangle and label the shorter sides x and the longer sides 2x-1.
