20% + 15% will be his discount, because not only is he an employee (20%), but he is buying during a 15% off sale. So he gets two discounts, 20% and 15%. That is 35%.

if the dishwasher originally cost $450, find 35% of 450.

450 x .35 = 157.5

That is the discount. Now subtract that from the original price to get the price you pay with the discount.

450 - 157.5 = 292.5

Final price after discount: $292.50
