Question 891608: A drinking water reservoir has the (average) dimensions of 10 meters depth, 200 meters width, and 1500 meters length. A spill of hydrogen cyanide has been discovered. What is the maximum amount of cyanide in kilograms that could be tolerated in the reservoir in order not to exceed the drinking water limit of 0.07 milligram per litre? (Assume the reservoir is well mixed.)
Answer by LinnW(1048)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, find the volume of the reservoir
10*200*1500 = 3,000,000 cubic meters
There are 1000 liters per cubic meter so we have
3,000,000 x 1,000 = 3,000,000,000 liters.
Set x = kilograms tolerated
0.07 milligrams = 0.00000007 kilograms

do cross products
x = 0.00000007(3000000000)
x = 210
checking 210/3000000000 = 7 x 10^-8
