Question 506544: CINDY IS MAKING A TRIP HOME FOR THANKSGIVING WHICH TAKES 8 HOURS ROUND TRIP. WITH THE HOLIDAY TRAFFIC, SHE AVERAGES 40 MILES AN HOUR ON THE WAY HOME AND 50 MILES AN HOUR ON THE WAY BACK TO SCHOOL. FIND THE TIME IT TOOK HER TO GET HOME AND THE TIME IT TOOK HER TO GET BACK TO SCHOOL. (USE THE FORMULA DISTANCE=RATE X TIME)
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let distance from school to homebe x
speed while going home= 40 mph
time while going home = x/40
..
speed returning = 50 mph
time returning = x/50
Total time = time going + time returning
8 = x/40 +x/50
LCD = 200
multiply by LCD
200*8 = 5x+4x
1600= 9x
x= 177.7 ( round off)
time going home = 178/40= 4.45 hours
time returning = 178/50= 3.55 hours
4.45 + 3.55 = 8 hours
