Question 132440: Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Stephanie is the star of her softball team. During last week's game, she hurt her knee as she slid into home, so she had taped her knee for yesterday's game. Her knee was a little stiff, so she could run only 5 mi/hr yesterday, which is slower than her usual running speed. Midway through yesterday's game, she was at second base, with a 5-foot lead off of the base. The distance from
second base to third base measured 60 feet. The pitcher pitched the ball, which traveled at 60 mi/hr. The distance from the pitcher's mound to home plate was 45 feet. Stephanie started running to third base the moment the pitcher pitched the ball. When the ball reached home plate the batter hit a line drive ball and it traveled at 75 mi/hr, directly to the right fielder, who was 180
feet away from home plate. The right fielder dropped the ball, then picked it up and threw it to third base. It took 2.5 seconds for the right fielder to drop the ball, pick it up, and release the throw. She threw the ball at 45 mi/hr to third base, which was 170 feet away. The third baseman caught the ball and tagged Stephanie. The act of catching the ball and applying the tag took 0.5
second. (Note: There are 5280 feet in 1 mile.) Was Stephanie safe or out? To be safe, Stephanie had to arrive at the base before the ball did.

Stephanie runs at 5mi/hr. feet per second. Since she has a 5 foot lead-off, she has to run 55 feet (60 - 5) to get to third base.
So it takes her seconds to arrive at third base.

The pitch: 60 mi/hr feet/sec. The pitch has to travel 45 feet, so the pitch takes seconds.

The line drive: 75 mi/hr feet/sec. The line drive has to travel 180 feet, so the line drive takes seconds.

The bobble: 2.5 seconds

The throw: 45 mi/hr is 3/4 of 60 mi/hr, so 88 * 3/4 = 66 feet/sec (or you could say ). The throw has to travel 170 feet, so the throw takes seconds

The tag: 0.5 seconds.

The ball is in play for rounds to Safe!

Super-double-plus extra credit. What if she had only taken a 3 foot lead-off?
