Question 1189565: Smoking has long been connected to all sorts of horrible diseases such as lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease, and others. It has been estimated that for every cigarette a person smokes, he or she loses anywhere from 10 to 15 minute of his or her life. Assuming the worst (15 minutes of life lost for each cigarette), how much shorter would the life span be of someone who smoked two packs a day for 35 years? (Each pack contains 20 cigarettes.) Assume that there are 365 days in a year and give your answer in years, days, hours, and minutes. (For example: 42 years, 152 days, 7 hours, and 28 minutes.)

1 pack = 20 cigarettes
2 packs = 40 cigarettes
The person smokes 40 cigarettes a day
Since 1 year = 365 days, give or take, this means they smoke 40*365 = 14,600 cigarettes a year.
This assumes that the rate of 2 packs per day is kept the same.
Over the course of 35 years, they smoke a grand total of 35*14,600 = 511,000 cigarettes
That's a little over half a million cigarettes.
Next, we assume the worst that one cigarette takes 15 minutes of max lifespan away.
That would mean 511,000 cigarettes take 15*511,000 = 7,665,000 minutes away.
The number 7,665,000 is roughly 7.67 million.
This is the total hypothetical time taken away. Keep in mind that all of this is very very loosely based on a lot of assumptions. In reality, there is no actual way to perfectly calculate the exact amount of lifespan lost. There are many other factors we haven't considered (eg: the persons diet and exercise routine).
-----------------------------------------------------
The next task is to convert that massive number into years, days, hours, minutes format.
We'll need this chart
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 24 hours
1 year = 365 days
Let's find out how many minutes there are in a day
1 day = 24 hours = 24*60 = 1440 minutes
Do the same for one year
1 year = 365 days = 365*1440 = 525,600 minutes
So the more relevant chart is
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 1440 minutes
1 year = 525,600 minutes
To convert from purely minutes to purely years, we divide by 525600
7,665,000 minutes = (7,665,000)/(525,600) = 14.5833333333333 years
which is approximate.
We drop the decimal portion and just focus on the 14 up front.
This means "14 years" is part of the final answer.
Multiply that decimal portion with 525600 so we figure out how much is left over so to speak
525600*0.5833333333333 = 306,599.999999982
That rounds to 306,600
Next, we divide that result by 1440
(306,600)/1440 = 212.916666666667
We ignore the decimal portion and see that it's roughly 212 days which is also part of the answer.
Then note that,
0.916666666667*1440 = 1,320.00000000048
which is basically 1,320 and the decimal portion at the very end is rounding error (the 48 shouldn't be there).
Lastly,
1320/60 = 22
Meaning 1320 minutes is exactly 22 hours. There are 0 extra minutes.
Overall,
7,665,000 minutes = 14 years, 212 days, 22 hours, 0 minutes
-----------------------------------------------------
Check:
We can use this formula
A = 525600B+1440C+60D+E
where
A = total time value in minutes only
B = number of years = 14
C = number of days = 212
D = number of hours = 22
E = number of minutes = 0
The 525600 refers to the number of minutes in a year (roughly)
The 1440 is the number of minutes in a day since 60*24 = 1440
The 60 refers to the number of minutes in an hour
So,
A = 525600B+1440C+60D+E
A = 525600*14+1440*212+60*22+0
A = 7,665,000
which matches from earlier. The answer is confirmed.
-----------------------------------------------------
Final Answer:
14 years, 212 days, 22 hours, 0 minutes
This value is approximate.
