Question 558403: The cost of a gallon of gas is 3.35 per gallon. If you travel 40 miles a day (back and forth to work) and your gas mileage is 25 miles per gallon, determine how much you will spend on gas a week.

I have tried to figure this out but I am just not sure what steps to take first. I just started this class and have been trying to teach myself because I haunt been able to make it to class. Thank you for your help!

Answer by scott8148(5883) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you travel 40 mi per day; times 5 days per week is 200 mi per week

200 mi divided by 25 mi per gallon is 8 gal of gas per week

8 gal times $3.35 per gal is the cost of a weeks worth of gas

Question 558276: A freshman is currently enjoying the Arts Studio program she is pursing at a well-know university. In her free time, she like to skate, take salsa dance lessons, and cook. She particularly enjoys pickling and decides to pickle olives over a lesisurely weekend. Accordng to the recipe, she needs to add three teaspoons of salt to one cup of diced olives. However, she erroneously adds six teaspoons instead. Each teaspoon of salt weighs about 5g and contains about 2300mg of sodium.
a). include all steps required for calculation
b). use correct procedure for conversion
c). deterine the amount of sodium acctually added, in grams
d). state the chemical fourmul of salt
e). classified the bond as ionic, polar covalent or non-polar convalent.

Answer by KMST(592) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
For chemistry homework questions, I would recommend the mychemistrytutor website. That website is not swamped with questions, and 99% or more of the question are answered within 24 hours or less. (I can even type superscripts there).
b) The conversion factor to get from teaspoons to milligrams of sodium, as stated in the problem, is (2300 mg sodium/1 teaspoon salt)
We can multiply it times (1 g sodium/1000mg sodium) to get
(1 g sodium/1000mg sodium)(2300mg sodium/1 teaspoon salt)=2.3 g sodium/1 teaspoon of salt
c) Based on that conversion factor, the 6 teaspoons of salt added contributed
(6 teaspoons salt)(2.3 g sodium/1 teaspoon of salt)=13.8 g sodium
d) Table salt is sodium chloride, with formula NaCl.
e) The sodium and the chlorine are present as ions Na+, and Cl- (The + and - are supposed to be superscripts, written higher than the other characters, as if they were exponents). The sodium cations and chloride anions are charged and held together by electrostatic forces (opposites attract). It is called an ionic bond.
It is not really a molecule. A salt crystal is an arrangement of sodium ions and chloride ions, with same number of both, but not arranged in pairs. Each sodium ions is surrounded by chloride ions, and each chloride ion is surrounded by sodium ions. The minimum unit with the composition of sodium chloride would be one ion of each. That is called a formula unit (not a molecule). The mass of a formula unit of sodium chloride, in atomic mass units, is the sum of the atomic masses of sodium and chlorine (22.99+35.45=58.44) and is the formula weight of sodium chloride. It is a formula weight, not a molecular weight. The ratio of masses of sodium and sodium chloride is (22.99 units of Na/58.44 units NaCl).
From that ratio we can calculate
(22.99 g Na/58.44 g NaCl)(about 5 g NaCl/1 teaspoon salt)=about 2 g Na/1 teaspoon salt

Question 557878: Hi I'm am trying to figure out the correct unit analysis for this problem.
A marathon is a long distance event that covers 26.2 miles. If the average runner can run 515 ft in one minute, how many hours will it take to complete the marathon? ( round your result to one decimal place).

I have tried multiplying 26.2 by 515 then divided by 5280 but I got 2.5 and the answer is approx. 4.5.

Answer by scott8148(5883) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
515 ft/min * 60 min/hr = ? ft/hr

26.2 mi/marathon * 5280 ft/mi = ? ft/marathon

Question 557360: One milliliter of water at 4 Celsius has a mass of approximately one gram. What is the approximate mass of 1 liter of water at this temperature?
How do you do the above problem?

Answer by Theo(2973) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1 milliliter of water at 4 celsius has a mass of approximately 1 gram.
what is the approximate mass of 1 liter of water at the same temperature?
the density of the water will be the same because they're at the same temperature.
what is different is the total mass.
1 liter is equal to 1000 milliliters.
if 1 milliliter measures 1 gram, then 1 liter will measure 1000 grams.
1000 grams can also be shown as 1 kilogram because:
1 kilogram = 1000 grams.

Question 537776: How many sq foot is there in a 7 x 83 wall thats 8 inches thick? Please how did you get the answer.
Answer by solver91311(12126) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

If you really just want the area (you asked for "sq foot") then just multiply the height of the wall times the length of the wall, and the thickness makes no difference.

On the other hand, if you wanted the volume as you imply by the fact that you provided the thickness of the wall, then in the first place you should have asked "How many cubic feet..." In this case you take the area (in square feet) that you calculated by multiplying the height of the wall times the length of the wall and multiply that area by the thickness of the wall IN FEET.

You gave the thickness in inches, so you have to figure out how many feet is represented by 8 inches. To convert inches to feet, divide the number of inches by 12, and, in this case anyway, reduce the fraction.

Answer by oberobic(2302) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Square feet are simply measures of area.
.
75 cents per square ft is the cost of the glass.
.
He paid $6 for the glass, so you he bought 600 cents worth of glass.
.
At 75 cents per sq. ft, he bought 8 sq ft of glass.
.
The area = 8 sq ft
.
The height = 4 ft
.
So the width has to be 8/4 = 2 ft.
.
2 ft * 4 ft = 8 sq ft
.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
for converting cement cubic yards to the following dimensions

:
Find the vol in cu/ft
.5 * 30 * 90 = 1350 cu/ft
there are 3^3, 27 cu/ft in 1 cu/yd
1350/27 = 50 cu/yds
