Question 230635: Two families meet at a park for a picnic. At the end of the day, one family travels east at an average speed of 42 miles per hour, and the other family travels west at an average speed of 50 miles per hour. Both families have approximately 160 miles to travel.
(a) Find the time it takes each family to get home.
(b) Find the time that will have elapsed when they are 100 miles apart.
(c) Find the distance the eastbound family has to travel after the westbound family has arrived home.

Question 231005: Please show me the eqution set up for this problem. I know it is d=rt but I don't know how to write it out. On one web site I read it said I could not add the rates. Now im really confused been looking for hours for help. Tried to figure it like this
300+150=1000
450x=1000
divide both sides by 450
x=2.22
but when i try to check my problem 450(2.22)=999 not 1000?
Please help!
The problem: Two planes leave the same airport at the same time, flying in opposite directions. The rate of the faster plane is 300 miles per hour. The rate of the slower plane is 150 miles per hour. After how many hours will the planes be 1000 miles apart?

I drew a picture first.. then i thought that the mph for the first 330 miles is x? and for the second 240 miles was x+5? Im so confused on how to calculate the 10 hours part in...:(

Question 231453: Amy drove the 200 miles to New Orleans at an average speed 10 miles per hour faster than her usual average speed. If she completed the trip in 1 hour less than usual, what is her usual driving speed in miles per hour.
I know the answer is 40 miles per hour, but how did they come up with this? I think there is numbers missing in this problem.

I come up with 200/(x-10) - 200/x = 1... I don't even know if this is right with the D=RT formula ???
