Question 214838: Car A is traveling at 20 miles per hour. Car B is one mile behind, following at 30 miles per hour. A fly can move 40 miles per hour. The fly begins on the front bumper of car B and flys back and forth between the two cars. How many miles will the fly travel before it is crushed in the collision?
Totally confused as to how to set it up. I know
Car A rate = 20/hr
Car B rate = 30/hr and distance = d-1
Fly rate hr
I assume time is constant

Question 214899: This question I come up with the wrong answer:
Pete drove from Buffalo to Boston, a distance of 720km. On return trip he increased his speed by 10km/h. If the total trip took 17h, what was his speed from Boston to Buffalo?
I'm having trouble working it out, I begin with this:
I start with (720/x)+(720/x+10)
Expanded it to: 17x^2 - 1270x + 7200
Speed I got next using the quadratic equation: 62.5
But thats apparently wrong, what am I doing wrong?

Question 215507: My question is a precalculus question and it wants us to basically translate word problem into a function
Car A passes point O heading east at a constant rate of 40mi/h; car B passes the same point 1 hour later heading north at a constant rate of 60mi/h. Express the distance between the cars as a function of time t, where t is measured starting when car B passes point O.
I drew a diagram of this, and thought of using the Pythagorean Theorum to find the distance between car A and Car b, but I just don't know how to incoporate the "1 hour later part." the answer in the book is 20
