Question 24165: The Answer to question 22464 is wrong. It doesn't pass a sanity check. In 6 hours only 90 miles of difference could be established, Therefore the slower train must be travelling faster than 290 mph to be 580 miles ahead after 6 hours.
Here is the correct answer:
8(x) - 6(x+15) = 580
2x = 670
x = 335 speed of first train
x + 15 = 360 speed of second faster train
This is not a realistic problem but algebra none the less. Thanks for the great site but students don't need to be confused this way
