Question 139334: I need to solve this with either the elimination or substitution method. Thank you. It takes Boat A 3 hours longer to travel 50kms than it takes Boat B to travel 60kms. Boat A travels one third the speed of Boat B. What is the speed of each boat.

Question 139479: The speed of a stream is 5km/h. If a boat travels 76kms downstream in 2 hrs less time than it takes to travel 54km upstream, what is the speed of the boat in still water.
I have gotten this far but am not sure if this is correct.
Downstream Boat D= 76km Rate= r+5 Time - t-2. Equation: 76= (r+5) * (t-2)
Upstream Boat D = 54 kms. Rate = r-5 Time = t. Equation 54km= (r-5) *t
To solve Upstream Boat of 54=(r-5)*t = 54= tr-5. Then I divide 54 by 5 to get 10.8. But I am stuck from here and do not think I am on the right track to solving this answer on the speed of the boat. Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Question 139882: please help me solve.
Driven from Albuquerque,NM to Rock Springs,WY. The average speed is 55 miles per hour. The Route is along interstate 25 to Cheyenne, Wy, then to interstate 80 to Rock Spring.
I added it up to 799 miles.
What would be the total driving time to the nearest half hour?
I figure it to be 14.5 hours.
Please show me the steps. I do not know how to write it out. Is this correct?

Question 140884: Two planes start from LA Internation airport and fly in opposite directions. The second plane starts 30 minutes after the first plane, but is 80 km per hour faster. Find the airspeed of each plane if 2 hours after the 1st plane departs the plane are 3200 km apart.
I went about setting up the equation:
x=speed of p1
x=speed of p2
2x-(3/2y)=3200,
but don't know what to do next... your help would be appreciated!! thanks.

distance 50 km ; Rate = x kph ; time = 50/x

distance = 60 km ; rate = 3x kph ; time = 60/(3x)

EQUATION:
time A - time B = 3
50/x - 60/(3x) = 3
Multiply thru by 3x to get
150 - 60 = 9x
90 = 9x
x = 10 kph (speed of A-Boat)
3x = 30 kph (speed of B-Boat)

It takes a cabin cruiser 3 hours longer to travel 50kms than it takes a power boat to travel 60kms. The cruiser travels one third the speed of the power boat. Find the speed of each boat.

distance = 50 km ; rate = x kph ; time = 50/x hrs

Power Boat DATA:
distance = 60 km ; rate = 3x kph ; time = 60/(3x) hrs

50/x = 60/3x + 3

x = 70/3 = 23 1/3 kph (cruiser speed)

The questions are identical, save for the description of the boats, yet the answers are different.
Please confirm the answer to the second question is correct ...... I would have thought the equation should have read:
Multiply thru by 3x to get:
150 = 60 + 9x
90 = 9x
x = 90/9 = 10 kph (cruiser speed)
3x = 10*3 = 30 kph (power boat speed)
