Question 117907: Not sure how to set this one up. can you help please. Thanks
solve and check
t1=3
t2=2
v1
v2 = v1+8
Distance = velocity * time
Given Distance = 291
Distance to the meeting = v1 *t1 =D1
Distance back from meeting = v2 * t2=D2
Total trip Distance = D1 + D2
291 = 3(v1) + 2(v1+8)
291 = 3v1 + 2v1 + 16
Combine like terms and solve for v1
291= 5v1 + 16
291-16 = 5v1+16-16
275 = 5v1
275/5 = v1
55 mph = v1
Now you can find v2 which is equal to v1 + 8: v2 = 55 + 8 = 63 mph
Hope that helps!

Question 117868This question is from textbook College Algebra
: Come with your responses to the following questions:
a) A satellite has an elliptical orbit around the earth with one focus at the earth’s center, E. The earth’s radius is 4000 miles, the highest point that the satellite is from the surface of the earth is 800 miles, and the lowest is 200 miles. Find the eccentricity of the satellite’s orbit. (This is number 24 on page 491.)
b) As a follow up, develop two more examples with different values other than 800 and 200. Show your equations, work, and examples.
c) Compare your results and examples to the information found at the following site: http://ilrs.gsfc.nasa.gov/satellite_missions/slr_sats.html.
d) Look at the data under the table titled SLR Satellite Orbit Information, and see if you find any satellites that are close in terms of the eccentricity calculated for the initial problem. Note any that are close to the same eccentricity your team calculated.

Question 117126: Problem: A train leaves Chicago for Detroit going 60 mph. At the same time, on an adjacent track, a train leaves Detroit heading for Chicago going 45 mph. Detroit is 280 miles from Chicago. How far are the trains from Chicago when they pass? Help, have been working on for 2 days and I think the answer to this problem is that the trains will be 160 miles from chicago when they meet, but i'm supposed to solve with a system on equations and solve eithe by subst. of combination. I solved this intuitively, thinking combined speeds (60x+45x=280) x=2.66 hrs when they meet, then plug back in...60*2.66=~160miles from chi.
