A car goes from point A to point B, at a rate of 40 mph. Then the same car turns around and goes from point B to point A, at a rate of 60 mph. What is the average speen of this car? My teacher said that it was not 50 mph. I am very confused on this and would like a thurough explination. Thank you so much for this. :D I need all the help, and it is very much appreciated. I've spent time trying to figure out the answer to this, and I've come up with an average speed of 55 mph, but I am not sure how I got that, and I don't know how to check if it is right. Question 11610: Hello, Here is the question I need to solve to begin with
An earthquake emits primary waves moving at 8.0 Km/s and seconday waves moving at 5.0 km/s. How far from the epi-center of the earthquake is the seismic station if the two waves arrive at the station 2.0 min apart.
What I could figure out (I think)
I was converting time to seconds
2 min = 60x2=120 min
and converting km/s to ft/s
8.0km/s x 1000 m =8000m
8000m x 3.281 = 26248 ft/s
5.0km/s x 1000 m = 5000 m
5000m x 3.281 ft = 16405 ft/s
I was also trying calculations with d=rt where d= distance r= stands for rate of speed and t= time.
Thank you so much to any help or direction you can point me in!

"Two people leave their house at the same time, A-rides north at 12mph, B-rides west at 5mph. Maintaining speed, how far apart after 2 hours of riding."
I had: D=RT, D=(12)(2)=24 and D=(5)(2)=10, then 24-10=14. But my choice for answers are: 34, 26, 17, 13 miles apart.

Question 11858: When a plane flies downwind, the wind pushes the plane so that its speed is the sum of the speed of plane in still air and the speed of wind traveling upwind, the wind pushes against the plane so that its speed is the difference of the speed of the plane in still air and the speed of the win.
Suppose a plane that travels 255mph in still air can travel 300 miles downwind in the same time as it takes to travel 210 miles upwind.
Complete the table and find speed of the wind
Downwind 255 + x ? 300

Question 12597: A starts running at Speed 5 km/h at 8 am. after 30 minutes B starts running from the same point in the same direction at Speed 6 km/h. At what time, B will catch A.
Sir I solved it like this. Pl. correct me where I was wrong. The answer is 11 am (3 hrs).
Speed of A= 5 KM/h
Distance travelled in 30 minutes= 2.5 kms.
Relatve speed of B w.r.t. A = (6-5)= 1 km/h.
Distance of 1 Km is covered in 1 hr by B.
therefore gap of 2.5 kms will be covered by B in 1 * 2.5= 150 minutes (2 hrs 30 minutes) whereas the answer is 3 hrs. Pl. correct me.
