Question 91267This question is from textbook beginning algebra
: A bus leaves a station at 1 pm, travelling west at an average rate of 44mi/h. At 2 pm on the same day a second bus leaves the same station, travelling east at a rate of 48 mi/h. Approximately at what time will the two busses be 274 mi apart? This is as far as I got in understanding what to do. I realize I'm dealing with d = r * t, So,
44t + 48(t-1) =274
44t+48t-48=274
92t-48=274
92t=322
Help! please.

Question 91536: If two cars start driving in the same direction from the same place, while one is traveling 45 mph and the other 50 mph, how long will it take them to be 30 miles apart?
I've done this problem 2 ways and both ways gives me the answer, but they are actually reversed.
First way: 45(x+30) = 50x Answer: x = 270, x+30 = 300
Seconc way: 45x = 50(x-30) Answer: x = 300, x-30 = 270
when completed: 270/45 = 6 and 300/50 = 6
However, the two ways I've done this problem I can't get 6 because 270 and 300 are matched with the incorrect variable.
HELP....PLEASE, what have I done incorrectly??

Question 92679: I just got the answer to a problem I asked earlier ... thank you. Now, I have another question that is similar and I want to see if I am understanding this correctly.
Two trains left a station at the same time. One traveled north at a certain speed and the other traveled south at twice the speed. After 4 hours, the trains were 600 miles apart. How fast was each train traveling?
This is what I came up with ... am I right?
d = 400
t = 4
r = x (1st train) and 2x (2nd train)
400 = 4(x)+4(2x)
400 = 4x + 8x
400 = 12x
x = 33.33
2x = 66.66
