Question 501008: Hi!
I am sorry if this kind of question has been asked often before, but I just couldnt figure out how to solve and I would be so thankful if anyone could tell how to solve this mathematically. Thanks so much in advance!
"Through a combination of sight, sound, and smell a rabbit can detect a fox at 42 yards. When the rabbit detects the fox, it runs immediately straight to its hole. If the fox can run twice as fast as the rabbit, what is the maximum distance from its hole that a rabbit can safely venture? Assume that the rabbit escapes if they arrive at the hole at the same time."
Kind regards

Question 501138: An island is 2 miles from point P (land) on a straight shore line. a town is 12 miles down the shore line from P. If a person can row a boat at an average speed of 3 miles per hour and can walk at the rate of 5 miles per hour. build a model that expresses the time T that it takes to go from the island to town as a function of the distance x from P to where the person lands on the boat..
So i have set it up as a triangle to distance of x to where he lands. then the distance he walks is 12-x. i can't remember how to set up a distance formula that expresses time!! thanks if you can help

Question 501524: Alice is an alligator. Her swimming speed is 1.80m/s.
How much time is needed for her to swim 200m in a lake?
I got this one the equation I used was t=d/r (time=distance/rate). I got 111.1s
Is this right?
The next couple of questions build off each other. The one I am currently stuck on is:
Alice swims 1.80m/s in still water.
Alice then swims 200m DOWNSTREAM in a river taking 80s. What is the speed of the current?
I tried to rearrange and solve the previous equation for (r) since rate is what the unknown is, but ti doesn't come out right I get like 16000s. i need to know what I am doing wrong.
I need help mainly with comprehension of the question, I need to know what to ask myself to get the equation going. Please help.

Question 501562: A bug travels 5 inches per minute. How long before the bug completly circles the 14 feet by 20 feet room. I know the answer is 163.2 minutes or 2.72 hour, the answers are in our book but our teacher wants us to explain and I do not understand how to get those results. I have tried so far 14*20=280/5=56 14*20=280*12=3360/5=672 20*12=240/5=48 14*12=168/5=33.6 5*12=60/20=3 I simply so not understand this problem.
