Question 494438: A car travels along a straight line at a constant speed of 55.0 mi/h for a distance d and then another distance d in the same direction at another constant speed. The average velocity for the entire trip is 26.0 mi/h.
(a) What is the constant speed with which the car moved during the second distance d?
(b) Suppose the second distance d were traveled in the opposite direction; you forgot something and had to return home at the same constant speed as found in part (a). What is the average velocity for this trip?
(c) What is the average speed for this new trip?

Question 494908: If two vehicles, let's say a sedan and a truck, leave from the same location to get to the same point of arrival and they are going at the same rate of speed, let's say 55pmh, who gets to the point of destination first?
We assume the exact same route, with no obstacles. Just straight from one point to another. The only difference is a truck vs. a sedan.

Question 494927: Two cars A and B start from a given point and travel on a straight road at average speeds of 70 km/h and 90 km/h respectively. If B starts 1 h after A find out how long before A traveled before B overtook it and the distance each traveled before they met.
D=R.T
d=70t d=90t
d=70t+90t
d=160t
d/160=t

Question 495388: I need help with solving a word problem that always stumps me when i try to complete it. Here it is:
At 10:30 am two planes leave Houston, one flying east at 560 km/h and the other flying west at 640 km/h. At what time will they be 2100 km apart?
I have tried using a chart
Rate x Time = Distance
Plane 1: 640 x
Plane 2: 560 x???

Question 495650: Simpson drives his car with an average velocity of 46.2 km/h to the east. How long will it take him to drive 159 km on a straight highway? Answer in units of h
I tried multiplying the 46.2 time the 159 kilometers because thats what i got by manipulating the formula of average velocity which is displacement/total time traveled, but i got 7,345.8 and that is way too long..

Question 495658: Two planes start from the same airport and fly in opposite directions. The second plane starts 0.5 hours after the first plane, but it's speed is 80 km/hr faster. Find the speed of each plane if after 2 hours the planes are 3200 km apart.
I have tried setting up two seperate equations using the distance formula. The equations looked like this: 1600=2x, 1600=1.5(x+80). I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
