Question 477111: If the global climate were to warm significantly as a result of the greenhouse effect or other climatic change, the Arctic ice cap would start to mekt. The ice cap contains the equivalent of some 680,000 cubic miles of water. More than 200 million people live on land that is less than 3 feet above sea level. In the united states several large cities have low average elevations. Threee examples are boston(14Feet), new orleans(4feet),San diego(13feet). In this eare to estimate the rise in sea level if the artic ice cap were to melt and to determine whether this event would have a significant impact on people living in coastal areas.(a)oceans cover appproximately 71% of the total surface area of earth. Question 478315: This is a question off of my upcoming Flight Aptitude test:
It will take 4 hours, 32 minutes, and 30 seconds to dig one part of a mortar pit. If the other part takes exactly 3/4 of the time it takes to dig the first part, how long will it take to dig the second part of the mortar pit?
A) 2 Hours, 24 Minutes, 22.5 Seconds
B) 3 Hours, 46 Minutes, 36 Seconds
C) 3 Hours, 24 Minutes, 22.5 Seconds
D) 1 Hours, 56 Minutes, 39 Seconds
_________________
My work:
I think (A) is wrong because simplifying things down to just "hours", that's closer to 1/2 the time.
I think (D) is wrong because that is even less than (A), which is close to 1/2. So it is obviously not close to 3/4.
I do not know how to decide between B or C because of the seconds and minutes. Both hours are "3" which is close by approximation to 3/4 of the 4 hour, 32 minute, and 30 second time, which is how I ruled out (A) or (D).
I know I can take the minutes and convert that into an improper fraction with the hours. That gives me something like (Please forgive this long paragraph, not meaning to waste your time but I am also trying to figure this out as I type it)
Solving this:
Original Time: 4 hours, 32 minutes, 30 seconds.
Make this an improper fraction:
4 wholes, 32 parts. 32/60 = 8/15
4x15=60. So, our original time equals 68/15ths.
Multiply that by 3/4.
68x3=214. 15x4=60.
214/60 = 107/30.
This equals 3 wholes (which is 107 - 90, leaves me with 17/30, which converting back to minutes is 34 minutes (by multiplying by 2)).
So, 3 hours and 34 minutes. I need to incorporate those seconds to get an accurate answer but I don't know how.

I know this is way more involved than your average question you get on here but I would tremendously appreciate the help. Thank you very much! P.S. I know for a fact there is a simpler way to go about solving these, maybe a formula or logical pathway to a "10 second answer" because this took me over half an hour to type and I would have 60 seconds on my test. Again, thank you very much!
