Let's call the hours at 30 x and the hours at 41 y:

x+y= 7 Subtract x from both sides: y= 7-x Let's use this value for y:
30x+41y = 265
30x+41(7-x)= 265 Multiply on left to get rid of the parenthesis:
30x+287-41x= 265
-11x= -22 Divide both sides by -11
x= -22/-11 And remember that -/- = +
x= 2 She drove at 30mph for 2 hours. And:
7-2= 5 hours at 41mph
