Let f = dist rode on level ground (one-way)
let h = dist rode on the hill (up or down)

Write a time equation for the round trip. (Time = dist/speed
+ + + = 1
Get rid of the denominators, multiply by 12
2f + 3h + h + 2f = 12
4f + 4h = 12
simplify, divide by 4
f + h = 3 mi to her friends house
