Assign variables, as indicated in this data table.

            speed time distance
CANOE r x rx
CYCLE R y Ry
Total t d

KNOWN variables

UNKNOWN variables

FORMULATE THE EQUATIONS
---these are the obvious time sum and distance sum.
This system, purely in symbols is

and the unknown variables are x and y.

The only other help you would need is if you do not know how to solve a system of two linear equations in two variables, but you must be past that by now.

a 200 km trip was made by canoeing at 5km/h and cycling at 30 km/h. if the total time of the trip was 15 hours, find the distance traveled by each
Let distance canoeing be D
Then distance cycling = 200 – D
Time spent canoeing: , and time spent cycling was:
With total time being 15 hours, we get:
6D + 200 – D = 450 --------- Multiplying by LCD, 30
6D – D = 450 – 200
5D = 250
D, or distance canoeing = , or km
Distance cycling: 200 – 50, or km
