= time for the first lap, in seconds
= time for the second lap, in seconds
So,
= time for the second lap, in seconds,
and
= time for the first lap, in seconds.

I ran two laps around a track in 99 seconds. how long did it take me to run each lap if I ran the first lap at 8.5m/s and the second lap at 8.0 m/s?
let x=travel time of 1st lap
99-x=travel time of 2nd lap
distance=travel time*speed (same for both laps)
8.5x=8(99-x)
8.5x=792-8x
16.5x=792
x=48
99-x=51
run time of 1st lap=48 sec
run time of 2nd lap=51 sec
