Question 989553: Hi - I'm trying to work through this Alegebra word problem:
"In October 2011, Ed Carptenter won the Kentucky Indy 300 with a time of 01:42:02 for the 300-mi race. At one point, Carpenter was 20 mi closer to the finish than to the start. How far had Carpenter traveled at that point?"
Here's what I thought:
300=x*102
300=102x
x=0.34 miles
Thanks.

"In October 2011, Ed Carptenter won the Kentucky Indy 300 with a time of 01:42:02 for the 300-mi race. At one point, Carpenter was 20 mi closer to the finish than to the start. How far had Carpenter traveled at that point?"
Here's what I thought:
300=x*102
300=102x
x=0.34 miles
=================================
20 miles closer to the finish is 10 miles past the 1/2 way point.
--> 160 miles done, 140 to go.
==============
Or the hard way:
t = miles to go
d = miles traveled
----
d + t = 300
d - t = 20
================== Add
2d = 320
c = 160
