Question 986635: Hi, I am in 6th grade and I have a question. My math problem is 9368km divided by 500km. The bicyclist travels at 500km per minute. I'm supposed to find how many minutes it will take the bicyclist to travel. I get an answer of 18 with a reminder of 368 and I don't know how to put this into an answer. Just by looking at it I could say approx. 18 minutes but I don't know what to do with the remainder. Thanks for help!

time = distance/rate = 9368/500 = 18.736 min = 18min 44 seconds

How to write your answer::
9368 km/(500 km/min) = 18 368/500
= 18min (368/500)min = 18min (368/500)*60 sec = 18 min 44sec

(9368km)(1 min/500km)=18.736 minutes
.
With your remainder of 368 (that is, 368/500 minutes), you can convert to seconds:
(368/500 minutes)(60 seconds/1 minute)=44 and 80/500 seconds=44.16 seconds
This makes a total of 18 minutes 44.16 seconds (same as 18.736 minutes).

500km/minute (a bit over 18,000 mph) is kind of fast for a bicycle.
