Question 986101: Two buses going in opposite directions one bus going 20 mph slower than the other after 3 hours the buses are 270 miles apart what is the speed of each bus
Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
270 miles/3 hour=90 miles per hour
The combined speeds of the buses is 90 MPH
F=speed of faster bus; S=speed of slower bus=F-20MPH
.
F+S=90MPH
F+(F-20MPH)=90MPH
2F-20MPH=90MPH
2F=110MPH
F=55MPH ANSWER 1: The faster bus averaged 55 miles per hour.
S=F-20MPH=55MPH-20MPH=35 MPH ANSWER 2: The slower bus averaged 35 miles per hour.
