Question 985121: A phonograph record is 12" across.
An outer non-playing area 1" in width.
A non-playing central area 4" in diameter.
An average of 90 grooves per in.

.
The needle travels across the radius, not diameter.
12" diameter=6" radius
6" - (1" wide non-playing area) - (2" non-playing central radius) = 3 inches
ANSWER: The needle travels 3 inches.
