You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, you want to know how much of a
head start the 1st train got
+d%5B1%5D+=+50%2A3+
+d%5B1%5D+=+150+ mi is the 1st train's head start
------------------------------------------
Now you want to start a stop watch when the
2nd train leaves at 2 PM + +3+ hrs = 5 PM
Let +t+ = the time on the stopwatch when
the 2nd train catches up with the 1st train
( note that both trains will travel for the
same amount of time as shown on stop watch )
Let +d+ = the distance the 2nd train travels
until it catches the 1st train
---------------------------------------
Equation for 1st train:
(1) +d+-+150+=+50t+
Equation for 2nd train:
(2) +d+=+60t+
---------------------
Substitute (2) into (1)
(1) +60t+-+150+=+50t+
(1) +10t+=+150+
(1) +t+=+15+
The trains will meet +15+ hrs after 5 PM
+12+ hrs after 5 PM = 5 AM, and
5 AM + +3+ = 8 AM the following day
---------------------
check anwer:
(2) +d+=+60t+
(2) +d+=+60%2A15+
(2) +d+=+900+ mi
and
(1) +d+-+150+=+50t+
(1) +d+-+150+=+50%2A15+
(1) +d+=+750+%2B+150+
(1) +d+=+900+ mi
OK
