Answer by josmiceli(19441)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, you want to know how much of a
head start the 1st train got

mi is the 1st train's head start
------------------------------------------
Now you want to start a stop watch when the
2nd train leaves at 2 PM + hrs = 5 PM
Let = the time on the stopwatch when
the 2nd train catches up with the 1st train
( note that both trains will travel for the
same amount of time as shown on stop watch )
Let = the distance the 2nd train travels
until it catches the 1st train
---------------------------------------
Equation for 1st train:
(1)
Equation for 2nd train:
(2)
---------------------
Substitute (2) into (1)
(1)
(1)
(1)
The trains will meet hrs after 5 PM
hrs after 5 PM = 5 AM, and
5 AM + = 8 AM the following day
---------------------
check anwer:
(2)
(2)
(2) mi
and
(1)
(1)
(1)
(1) mi
OK
