Question 975775: Jamie is travelling with her best friend Amy from Grand Forks BC to Pincher Creek AB. They split the driving. The 440km trip takes 2.25 hours (excluding stops). Jamie drives at an average speed of 90km/h and Amy at an average speed of 80km/h. What system of linear equations could help Jamie determine the distance each person drove? How many hours does each person drive?
***it has been 37 years since I have had to do anything like this and my daughter needs help with the question. Thank you so much!

Impossible. In order to travel 440 km in 2.25 hours, you have to go faster than 195 km per hour. There is no way to average 195 km/h when the faster driver is only going 90 km/h, the RCMP and the lack of straight roadway on BC 3E and Crowsnest Trail that would allow such speeds notwithstanding. It is more like 540 km and 6.5 hours according to Google Maps.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it

Answer by josmiceli(19441)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let = the distance in km that Jamie drove
= the distance in km that Amy drove
Let = the time in hours that Jamie drove
= the time in hours that Amy drove
---------------------------------------------
Jamie's equation:
(1)
Amy's equation:
(2)
------------------------------
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2)
(2)
(2)
(2)
(2) hrs
This is more than the total time of 2.25 hrs
The average speed for the whole trip would
be
This is way more than their speeds, so I
think you may wave copied a number wrong.
By all means get another opinion on this.
