Pam and Sue left their house at the same time and headed in opposite directions. After 4 hours, they were 440 miles apart. If Pam drove 10 mph faster than Sue, how fast did Sue drive?
--------------------
Sue rate:: x
Pam rate:: x+10
----
Combined rate:: 2x+10
-----
Equation:
time*rate = distance
4 * (2x+10) = 440
8x + 40 = 440
8x = 400
x = 50 mph (Sue's rate)
x+10 = 60 mph (Pam's rate)
