A woman goes up a hill at 1.5mph and comes down at 4.5mph it takes her 6 hours how far did she travel??
-------------
Avg speed of the round trip = 2*1.5*4.5/(1.5+4.5) = 13.5/6 = 2.25 mi/hr
RT distance = 2.25*6 = 13.5 miles

Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Time spent going up hill=x
time spent coming down =(6-x)
Distances are the same. Velocity1 *time1=velocity2*time2
1.5x=4.5(6-x)
1.5x=27-4.5x
6x=27
x=4.5 hours
6-x=1.5 hours
distance 1 =4.5*1.5=6.75
distance 2= 1.5 *4.5=6.75
total 13.5 miles
* = multiply. We use that because x is a variable and x x y is not clear, whereas x*y is
