Question 971239: runner A crosses the starting line of a marathon and runs at an average pace of 5.6 miles an hour. half an hour later, runner B crosaes the starting line and runs at an average rate of 6.4 miles an hour. if the length of the marathon is 26.2 miles, which runner will finish ahead of the other? explain.
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The length is 26.2. Therefore, A will finish in:
26.2/5.6= 4.68 hours
Runner B:
26.2/6.4= 4.09
1/2 hour is the same as 0.5 hours.
Runner B: 4.09+0.5= 4.59
Runner B will finish 4.68-4.59= 0.09 of an hour ahead of Runner A. 0.09 of an hour is equal to 60x0.09= 5.4 minutes. .4 minutes is equal to 60x.4= 24 seconds, so in minutes and seconds runner B will finish 5 minutes and 24 seconds ahead of A (get it? hours have 60 minutes and minutes 60 seconds. When we calculate tenths, you have to then translate them into sixtieths)
