Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed of boat in still water = x
speed of current =3
(x+3) mph * t=60 miles t= (60)/(x+3)
(x-3) mph * t = 30 miles t=(30)/((x-3)
times are same. Therefore,
(60)/(x+3) = (30)/(x-3)
60 x -180 =30 x + 90 by cross-multiplication
30 x=270 by subtracting 30 x from both sides and adding 180 to both sides.
x =9 mph.
Check
Downstream at 12 mph, 5 hours to go 60 miles.
Upstream at 6 mph, 5 hours to go 30 miles.
