RT=D uniform rates rule of travel for rate, time, distance.

r=unknown plane rate
u=1200 miles
v=480 miles
t=unknown time to go the distance v

_____________________rate___________time____________distance
Long Distance_________r_____________t+3_____________u
Short Distance________r______________t______________v

An airplane took 3 h longer to fly 1200 mi than it took for a flight of 480 mi. If the plane's rate was the same on each trip, what was the time for each flight?
Let time taken to fly 1,200 miles, be T
Then time taken to fly 480 miles = T - 3
Since speed was same for both distances, then we can say that:

1,200(T – 3) = 480T ----- Cross-multiplying
1,200T – 3,600 = 480T
1,200T – 480T = 3,600
720T = 3,600
T, or time taken to fly 1,200 miles = , or hours
Time taken to fly 480 miles: 5 – 3, or hours
