Question 966111: How am I suppose to find time and distance in the problem below.
Joseph, Jane, Domonique, Daneka are the last four contestants left on he reality game show the Amazing Race. Joseph and Janet have nicknamed their team "Team J" and Domonique and Daneka call themselves "Team D". Today is the last day of their final pit stop. Whichever team gets there first will win the $1,000,000o prize.
Both teams are given a clue that they must make it to the Pontchartrain bridge(3939 North Causeway Boulevard, Metairie LA)as soon as possible to get their next clue. Team J is at the Superdome, and they take a taxi, which averages 35 miles per hour. Team D is at Parkway Tavern eating poboys, and they decide to take the bus, which averages 20 miles per hour.(HINT: use the D=(rate)*(time) formula, solved for t=D/r).
After each team arrives at the bridge, they are given the next clue and a tandem bicycle. The clue tells them to cross the bridge on the tandem bike. Individually, Joseph could cross the bridge in 50 minutes, Janet could cross the bridge in 75 minute, Domonique could cross the bridge in 60 minutes, and Daneka could cross in 45 minutes. On the tandem bikes the teammates get to work together to cross the bridge.
After they cross the bridge they are guided to a field in Fairview-Riverside State Park where a giant catapult is set up. The teams must come up with their own trajectory path to catapult themselves over the top of a 150 ft net. Team D uses the trajectory s(t)= -16t^2 + 102t. Team J sets their trajectory at s(t)= -16t^2 + 95t. Whichever team gets to the other side of the net first wins the $1,000,000.
Answer by macston(5194) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The distance from the Superdome to the address given is 7.6 miles.
The distance from the Parkway Tavern to the address given is 4.95 miles.
(This information from Google)
However, only one team has a trajectory that will go over the net, so that team will win.
Use the trajectory equations to find which team can get over the 150 foot net. If you really need to know all of the times and distances, post the question again, or send me a message and I'll help you through the whole thing: it was not clear, but I assumed you were just looking for the winner.
