Question 962981: Two cyclists are riding towards each other along a road (each at a constant speed.) At 8 a.m they are 63 miles apart. They meet at 11 a.m. If one cyclist rides at 12.5 miles per hour, what is the speed of the other cyclist?

In your problem we have two cyclists, a and b:
a+b= 63 and therefore b= 63-a. And,
rate*time= distance
12.5*3= distance(a)= 37.5km And we said b=63-a:
b= 63-37.5= 25.5 is the distance covered by b. Back to the formula:
distance= r*t divide both sides by t
distance/time= rate Now substitute with numbers
25.5/3= 8.5km/h is the speed of cyclist b
