Question 962439: A train leaves a station 3pm and a second train leaves the same station in the same direction at 6pm. The second train travels 84mph faster than the first train. The second train overtakes the first train at 8pm. What are the speed of the two trains?
Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D=RT
FIRST TRAIN:
8-3=5 HOURS @X MPH.
SECOND TRAIN:
8-6=2 HOURS @(X+84) MPH.
5X=2(X+84)
5X=2X+168
5X-2X=168
3X=168
X=168/3
X=56 MPH FOR THE FIRST TRAIN.
56+84=140 MPH FOR THE SECOND TRAIN.
PROOF:
5*56=2*140
280=280
