John travels on a bike at 16mph one way then 15mph back the same distance he takes a total time of 7 3/4 hours how far is one way?
:
let d = one-way distance
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
16mph time + 15mph time = 7.75 hrs
+ = 7.75
multiply equation by the least common multiple of 16 and 15, 240, resulting in:
15d + 16d = 240(7.75)
31d = 1860
d = 1860/31
d = 60 miles one way
:
:
Confirm this, find the actual time each way
60/16 = 3.75 hrs
60/15 = 4.00 hrs
-----------------
total: 7.75 hrs
