S=small van's capacity; L=large vans capacity=S+14
2S+L=65 Substitute for L
2S+S+14=65 Subtract 14 from each side.
3S=51 Divide each side by 3.
S=17 ANSWER 1: The small van could carry 17 people.
L=S+14=17+14=31 ANSWER 2: The large van could carry 31 people.
CHECK:
2S+L=65
2(17)+31=65
34+31=65
65=65
