Question 952371: A woman can bicycle 69 miles in the same time as it takes her to walk 15 miles. She can ride 9 mph faster than she can walk. How fast can she walk?

Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
w=rate she can walk
69mi/w+9mph=15mi/w Multiply each side by (w)(w+9mph)
69mi(w)=15mi(w+9mph) Divide each side by 69mi
w=(15/69)w+15/69(9mph) Subtract (15/69)w from each side.
(54/69)w=(135/69)mph Multiply each side by (69/54).
w=(135/54)mph=2.5 mph ANSWER: She can walk 2.5 mph
CHECK:
bicycle rate=w+9 mph=2.5+9=11.5mph
Time to bicycle 69 mi=69mi/11.5mph=6 hours
Time to walk 15 mi=15 mi/2.5 mph=6 hours
