Question 952250: During the first 300 miles of a 500-mile race, Michael averaged 180 miles per hour. If Ben averaged 178 miles pere hour during the same period, how far behind Michael was Ben at the instant Michael passed the 300-mile mark? If Michael continues at the same rate, what speed would Ben have to averagefor the remainder of the race in order to win?

During the first 300 miles of a 500-mile race, Michael averaged 180 miles per hour.
Find his travel time for the 1st 300 mi at 180 mph
= 1.67 hrs
:
If Ben averaged 178 miles per hour during the same period, how far behind Michael was Ben at the instant Michael passed the 300-mile mark?
Find how far B travels in 1.67 hrs
1.67 * 178 = 296.67 mi
therefore
300 - 296.67 = 3.33 mi behind M
:
If Michael continues at the same rate, what speed would Ben have to average for the remainder of the race in order to win?
B is 203.33 mi from the finish line
M will cross the finish line in: 200/180 = 1.111 hrs
B will win if he crosses the finish line in 1.1 hr (1/100th of an hr before M)
Speed = dist/time:
s = = 184.85 mph to win by less than a minute
