Question 951513: Two cars are 166 miles apart and travel toward each other on the same road. they meet in two hours .one car travels 3 miles an hour faster than the other. what is the average speed of each car?
Answer by macston(5194) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
r=speed of slower car; r+3mph=speed of faster car
166 miles/2 hrs=83mph The combined speed of the two cars is 83mph
Combined speed=r+(r+3mph)=83mph Subtract 3 mph from each side.
2r=80mph Divide each side by 2/
r=40 mph ANSWER 1: The average speed of the slower car is 40 mph
r+3mph=40mph+3mph=43mph ANSWER 2: The average speed of the faster car is 43 moh.
