Question 950737: Two planes are flying around the world. The first plane is flying at 300 miles per hour (mph) and is 350 miles ahead of the second plane. The second plane is flying at 400 mph. How long will it take for the second plane to catch the first plane?
Answer by josgarithmetic(39630) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
__________________rate__________time_____________distance
FIRST_____________300____________t________________d
SECND_____________400____________t________________d+350
The second plane must overcome both d and the 350 miles behind in the time of t, to catchup with the first plane. The travel time for this catching-up is the same for both planes, but this is the variable which is asked to be solved.
Using RT=D,
The simple substitution from the first equation gives this equation,
easily solvable to find t.
