Question 949862: Two cars are 180 mi apart and travel toward each other along the same road. They meet in 2 hours. One car travels 6mph faster than the other car. What is the average speed of the car?
Answer by macston(5194) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
R=rate of slower car; r+6mph=rate of faster car
180mi/2hrs=90 mi/hr The combined average rates of the cars is 90mph.
r+(r+6)=90 mph Subtract 6 mph from each side.
2r=84 mph Divide each side by 2.
r=42 mph ANSWER 1: Average speed of the slower car is 42 mph.
r+6=48 mph ANSWER 2: Average speed of the faster car is 48 mph.
