Question 949586: two buses leave a station at the same time and travel in opposite directions. one bus travels 14 km/h faster than the other. if the buses are 504 km apart after 2 hours, what is the rate of each bus?
Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The buses are separating at the rate of 504km/2hrs=252 km/hr so the combined rates are 252 km/hr. One bus travels at rate=r, the other rate=r+14 km/hr:
r+(r+14 km/hr)=252 km/hr Subtract 14 km/hr from each side.
2r=238 km/hr Divide each side by 2.
r=119 km/hr ANSWER 1: The slower bus is traveling at 119 km/hr
r+14 km/hr=119 km/hr+14 km.hr=133 km/hr ANSWER 2: The faster bus is traveling 133 km/hr.
