Question 949560: Two cyclists leave towns 78 mi apart at the same time and travel toward each other. One cyclist travels 3 mi/h slower than the other. If they meet in 2 hours, what is the rate of each cyclist?

The combined rate of the cyclists is 78 mi/2hrs=39 mi/hr
Cyclist one travels (r-3)mph, cyclist two travels at (r)mph
(r-3)+r=39 mi/hr
2r-3=39 mph
2r=42 mph
r=21 mph ANSWER Cyclist 2 travels at 21 mph.
(r-3)=(21-3)=18 mph ANSWER Cyclist 1 travels at 18 mph
