Question 949079: At 3:25 PM two trains left Kalamazoo Michigan. one train traveled west at a constant rate of 82 mph while the other traveled east at a constant rate of 66 mph. if they are now 111 miles apart what time is it now? Write and solve an equation to answer this question. We understand that it is 4:10 PM. We just need to know how to write the equation.

This is easiest handled with variables for time quantities instead of points in time. If that is good enough then this is a useful process.

__________________rate__________time(quantity)_________distance
WEST______________82_____________t_______________________x
EAST______________66_____________t_______________________y
Total____________________________________________________111

The variables x and y for distances are not really needed because the basic idea, RT=D, allowing expressions instead.

__________________rate__________time(quantity)_________distance
WEST______________82_____________t_______________________82t
EAST______________66_____________t_______________________66t
Total____________________________________________________111

HOW MUCH TIME PASSED for that distance total?

45 minutes.

Write and solve an equation to answer this question. We understand that it is 4:10 PM. We just need to know how to write the equation.
Let time taken for the trains to be 111 miles apart, be T
Then at that time, the faster train (82 mph) had traveled 82T miles
At that same time, the slower train (66 mph) had traveled 66T miles
When the faster train had covered 82T miles, and the slower train had traveled 66T miles, both had covered 111 miles
Therefore, we can say that: 82T + 66T = 111
148T = 111
T, or time taken by each to cover 111 miles, travelling in opposite directions = , or hours, or
Current time: , or
