A train traveled 90 miles in 1.5 hours.
It travels 330 miles in 330*1.5/90=5.5 hours
Speed=90/1.5=60 miles/hour
Time taken to travel 330 miles=distance/speed=330/60=5.5 hours
We get the same answer in both cases.

A: RATIO: 90 mi is to 330 mi as 1.5 hours is to x:
90 mi/330 mi=1.5 hr/x Multiply each side by 330x miles
(90 mi)x=(1.5 hr)(330 mi) Divide each side by 90 miles
x=1.5 hr(330 mi)/90 mi=495 hr/90=5.5 hrs
B: Using d=rt
d=rt
r=d/t=90 mi/1.5 hr=60 mi/hr
t=d/r=330 mi/60 mi/hr=5.5 hrs

a. Use proportions to solve and show your work with units.

A proportion is the equality of two or more ratios.

d, miles known
t, time known
-
s, miles known
x, time UNKNOWN
-
If d/t is a constant, and s is based THAT constant, then you have a proportion:

You can solve for x,.....

Note that YOUR value for r would be .

hours.

--
You can work with the formula, x=rt this way.
x, distance
r, rate of travel
t, time

find t.

;
I use here x for distance.

Proportion:
, with T being the amount of time
90T = 1.5(330) ------- Cross-multiplying
90T = 495
T, or time = , or , or hours
Distance Formula:
, or

r, or rate of speed = mph
Time (t) taken to travel 330 miles, at a rate of 60 mph: , or , or hours
