Question 945528: two cars, 480 kilometers apart begin driving toward each other on a long straight highway. one car travels 90 kilometers per hour and the other 70 kilometers per hour. at the same time a canary starting on one car flies back and forth between the two cars as they approach each other. if the canary flies 140 kilometers per hour and spends no time to turn around at each car, how far has it flown when the cars collide?

If one car drives 70km/hr and the other 90 km/hr they approach at (70 km/hr+90km/hr)=160 km/hr from 480 km apart, it takes (480 km/160 km/hr)= 3 hrs for the cars to meet. At 140 km/hr the bird flies (3 hrs)(140 km/hr)=420 km
ANSWER The canary flies 420 km in the time it takes the cars to meet.
