Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A family making a long trip drove 1/4 of the distance on the first day,
575 miles on the second day and
125 miles more than the first day on the third day.
How long was the trip?
:
let d = total distance of the trip
:
dist = day 1 + day 2 + day 3
d = d + 575 + d + 125
Add the like terms
d = d + 700
d - d = 700
d = 700
multiply both sides by 2, get rid of the fraction
d = 1400 mi

Confirm this for yourself, calculate:
d = (1400) + 575 + (1400) + 125
